Esther Kwan, now 59, last graced the screen in the 2013 TVB series “Always and Ever” (情逆三世缘). Over the past decade, rumors of her comeback have surfaced time and again, yet none have materialized.
Nowadays, insights into her life are mainly gathered from her husband, Nick Cheung, as Kwan isn’t active on social media, doesn’t attend public events, and leads a life markedly different from other retired female artists. Many speculate that post-marriage and motherhood, Kwan chose to focus on her daughter’s upbringing and education, with some even suggesting that Cheung prefers her to dedicate herself to the family. However, the couple has never openly addressed these speculations until Cheung appeared on Carol Cheng’s talk show, “The Do Show.”
During the interview, Cheung was asked if Kwan gave up her acting career for her family—a question that, despite its apparent simplicity, had never been formally addressed. Cheung clarified that they had never explicitly discussed the matter, implying that they never felt it necessary to justify her departure from the spotlight or focus on family life. He also dispelled any notion of forbidding Kwan from returning to acting but didn’t elaborate on why she remains reluctant to make a comeback. Instead, he shed light on her current passion, revealing Kwan’s profound obsession with ceramics, to the point of madness and terror, spending days and nights perfecting her craft.
Cheung’s revelation offers two insights: first, it’s Kwan’s personal choice not to return to acting, and second, she now prefers pursuing personal interests and hobbies, unhindered by external attractions. Not every actor views acting as their life’s passion. For some, entering the industry might have been a twist of fate, and though they achieved success, their life’s plan might include priorities beyond acting. Hence, after stepping away from the limelight, they embark on a distinct path, fulfilling their true aspirations.
