Michelle Yeoh to Receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom

Actress Michelle Yeoh (楊紫瓊), the first Asian Best Actress Oscar winner, who is also married to long-time partner and Ferrari president Jean Todt, has successfully managed both her career and personal life. Recently, there’s more good news for Michelle as she will be awarded the highest civilian honor in the United States, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, to be personally presented by President Biden. The ceremony will take place on May 3 at the White House.

According to international media reports, 61-year-old Michelle Yeoh has been selected as this year’s recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, making her the first Chinese actress to receive this award. Established in 1963 by the late President John F. Kennedy, the award recognizes individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors. Recipients do not need to be U.S. citizens and can be awarded posthumously. The Presidential Medal of Freedom, along with the Congressional Gold Medal, represents the highest civilian honor in the U.S.

Previous entertainers who have received the Presidential Medal of Freedom include the late “King of Rock and Roll” Elvis Presley, two-time Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks, and renowned Hollywood director Steven Spielberg. Among the non-U.S. citizens who have received the award are the late Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mother Teresa and the late former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
